Star Paige Honeycutt led six SCC players onto the all-region softball team announced this week.
Surry Community College placed five women on the Region X first team and one on the second team.
Honeycutt, recently named team MVP and SCC student-athlete of the year, was named Region X player of the year as well. Anna Mitchell, Hayley Durham, Lindsay Mathis and Megan Mabe joined Honeycutt on the first team, while Whitney Joyner was named to the second team. Mitchell, like Honeycutt, is an East Surry graduate who went 11-8 with an ERA of 3.08 while handling the bulk of the pitching load. Durham and Joyner were teammates at Surry Central before joining the Lady Knights. Durham batted .333; and Joyner batted .278 and finished second for doubles and RBIs. Mabe, Glenn High, was second on the team with a .378 batting average. Mathis, Forbush, tied for the team lead with 34 runs scored.
As for the player of the year, Coach Amber Reid said she felt like she’d won the lottery when the Cardinal star chose SCC for her first two years of college.
Reid said she felt like Honeycutt was one of the best players in the entire state after finishing four years on varsity and winning back-to-back state 1A titles.
“She is probably the smartest ballplayer we’ve ever had,” said East Surry Coach Derrick Hill. “She knew the game as well as we did. She always made the right play.” Hill said that he and the entire coaching staff are very proud of all she’s accomplished.
He added that the sophomore still comes to East Surry games to support the program.
As a freshman, Honeycutt set a school record for batting average. Then she broke that record this season, going .474 with four home runs and 39 RBIs. In 143 at-bats, she only struck out six times, and two of those were on called strikes that she felt were outside the strike zone.
Both Hill and Reid called her the best clutch hitter they’ve coached.
“She’s the player you want with a bat in her hand when there’s two outs and a runner on base,” said Reid.
The team went 2-1 in a tournament on Friday. Even in the game the Knights lost, Reid said Honeycutt showed why she’s the MVP. She picked two runners off third base and blocked about a dozen low pitches to prevent runners from advancing. She also hit a home run to tie the game. She is a good sport, shows really good character and holds a 3.7 GPA, the coach noted. She will matriculate to UNC-Charlotte next year to major in accounting. The sophomore played every game behind the plate. Her presence meant that Joyner, a catcher in high school, had to move to third base. Joyner did so well at her new home that the coaching staff named her defensive player of the year.

Paige Honeycutt was a single away from hitting for the cycle Sunday as she had a double her second time at bat, a triple and would score for her third, and a 3 run homer for her fourth that would just add insurance to the 3-0 lead and put the Knights up 6-0 in the first game. Anna Mitchell would get the win for the Knights with 9 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowing only 3 hits.
