The Surry Knights Softball Team finished their season up on May 2nd, 2009 in Hartsville, SC at the Region X NJCAA Softball Tournament. The Knights came into the tournament as the 7th seeded team and made it to “Championship Sunday” but was eliminated by Pitt Community College after a 9 inning battle.

SCC made an appearance as they knocked off 10th seed Southeastern Community College on Friday morning which sent them through to play the 2nd seed, Aiken Tech. The Knights defeated Aiken by a score of 1-0 and a continuation of winners bracket play on Saturday. Surry fell to 3rd seed Florence Darlington Technical College early, but bounced back to defeat USC Salkehatchie (5th seed)2-0 and play another day.

This set up the match up with 4th seeded Pitt Community College which Surry jumped on early scoring in the 3rd inning. The Bulldogs answered back as they added one to the score off an error by Surry’s second baseman to tie the game. It would be a pitching dual until Pitt put the pressure on in the bottom of the ninth when a sacrifice bunt led to another error by the Surry third basemen that would make it past the right fielder for Pitt to come away with the victory.

Despite the loss, The Surry lady Knights faced a challenge head on and proved that they deserved a spot in this conference as a first year team. Surry finished the regular season in 7thplace and the tournament in 4thplace and looks forward to building on that in the future!
