Lady Knights finish 4th in the REGION X Softball Tournament

Surry has faced USC - Salk four times this year. They have beaten the Indians two out of the four times with outstanding pitching performances by Anna Mitchell and Brooke Honeycutt. The first two appearances between the two clubs was at the Mizuno Invitational TOurnament held by Aiken Tech. The Knights split with the Indians and then split again for Region play when Surry hosted Salk for regular season contest. Based on records Surry captured the 4 seed and Salk finished in 5th.

Surry lost to Salk on Friday by a score of 0-1. Brooke Honeycutt pitched 7 innings struck out 9 batters and allowed only one run. Paige Honeycutt and Brittany Draughn led the offense going 1 for 3.

Saturday the Knights had to take on Stanly Community College to continue through the tournament. Surry defeated Stanly 2-0 with Mallorie Vogler and Brittany Draughn scoring for the Knights. In the first Draughn drew the walk and scored off Hannah Bullins sacrifice fly to centerfield to put Surry on the board. In the fifth, Mallorie Vogler led off the inning with a single and was bunted over by Brittany Draughn and put into scoring position for Paige Honeycutt, who came through with the RBI. Brooke Honeycutt would get the win only allowing two hits in seven innings of work.

Later in the day Surry would have to take on Florence Darlington through the tournament. The Knights would find their bats and defeat the Stingers 7-1. Paige Honeycutt led offensively going 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Shawn Watson and Brittany Draughn were 2 for 4, and Mallorie Vogler, Brooke Honeycutt, Courtney Reid and Megan Marshall were 1 for 4. Brooke Honeycutt tossed four innings for the Knights with 2 strikeouts on four hits and allowed 1 run. Anna Mitchell came in for three innings to close the game out.

Surry would come up a little short and end their season with the matchup that they started the tournament with. In order to advance to Championship Sunday, the Knights had to get passed the Salkehatchie Indians. The second inning the Indians would get on the board when Salk's centerfielder, Alyssa Chambers ripped a 3 run triple off starting pitcher Anna Mitchell who struck out 4 Indian batters in 3.3 innings of work. Brooke Honeycutt came in for relief in the fourth and shut down the Indian offense striking out 6 Salk batters and scattering 3 hits. On the offense side of things, Brittany Draughn, Paige Honeycutt, Brooke Honeycutt and Shawn Watson each recorded 2 hits and Draughn and Paige Honeycutt were the only two Knights to score when Draughn reached on a throwing error and scored off a double by Honeycutt. Honeycutt would tag up on a fly ball to right field by her sister and score off a sacrifice ball by Hannah Bullins. In the seventh inning and the last chance for Surry, Vogler reaches on an error and Draughn beats out a sacrifice bunt, Paige flys out, Brooke hits a line shot up the middle. With bases loaded and two chances the Knights just could not push another across.

The Lady Knights Softball Team has once again put together a great season and improved to 24 and 19 overall! With a great effort at the tournament, Surry finished fourth place equal to their finish in the regular season. We wish our sophomores the best of luck and hope you will catch us again next year for another exciting softball season.
