Surry Defeats Catawba Valley

 

 

Kara Hodges led Surry with 35 assists against Catawba Valley.

Dobson, NC- Surry used a late rally in the fourth set to defeat Catawba Valley, 3-1, in Region X volleyball action on Thursday.  Trailing 19-16, the Lady Knights reeled off nine straight points to capture the match, 25-19.  “Tori (Nelson) got on a roll serving, and we just kept the ball in play,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser.  “They refused to let the ball hit the floor.  I am so proud of these girls.  They played extremely hard and everyone pulled together.”

In the first set, Surry fell behind 4-0 to the Buccaneers before battling back to take the set, 25-22.  The Lady Knights took the second game, 25-15, to take a 2-1 lead.  Catawba Valley edged Surry in the third set, 25-23, to cut the lead to 2-1.  

The Surry offense was led by Summer Robertson with 14 kills while Brittany Tolbert added 13 kills and Sara Parker recorded 12 kills.  Kara Hodges dished out 35 assists while adding four kills.  Taylor Moxley and Alyssa Parker each notched two service aces for the Lady Knights.

Moxley led the Surry defense with 21 digs while Hodges added seven digs.  Tori Nelson also contributed five digs.  Robertson led the Lady Knights with six blocks while Amber Owens and Elizabeth Marshall each added two.  “It was a great college volleyball game full of great plays,” added Marion-Kiser.  “We had a great crowd and our team really appreciates their support.”

Surry (21-3) will host Piedmont College on Tuesday in their second annual Dig Pink game starting at 6 pm.  The game is a benefit to raise awareness and funding for breast cancer.  Admission is free with all fans being eligible for various door prizes.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.
