Surry Downs Hurricanes and Vanguards  

 

Surry defeated Vance-Granville Vanguards in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-8, and 25-16 in volleyball action on Saturday, September 26. Surry jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the Vanguards in the first set, and trailed only once during the match.

The Knights were led by outside hitter Megan Stanley with fifteen kills while Mallorie Vogler and Patty Murphy added ten kills each. Defensively, Brittany Draughn notched fourteen digs from her libero position.

“We came out a little flat, but during the second and third sets, we played some of the best volleyball we have played all year,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “We just need to be more consistent in our overall play.”

On Friday, September 25, the Knights defeated the Louisburg College Hurricanes taking the match in threes set by scores of 25-11, 25-20, and 25-12. Surry received solid front court play from several players including Hannah Fulk, Cassie Durham, Amber Owens, Murphy, Stanley, and Vogler. The Knights backcourt turned in another solid performance against the Hurricanes led by Draughn and defensive specialist Taylor Moxley while setter Caitlin Voigt led the team in assists.

“Overall, we didn’t play all that well at Louisburg, but we found a way to get the job done.” stated Marion-Kiser.

The Knights (9-0) will take on Catawba Valley on Tuesday, Dobson campus gym and admission is free.
