Surry defeated the Central Carolina Cougars in straight sets in volleyball action on Wednesday evening, September 23. The Knights took game one, 25-7, behind the serving of Mallorie Vogler. With Surry leading, 2-1, Vogler reeled off nine consecutive service points including three aces to build an 11-1 advantage. Leading 20-7, Surry finished off the Cougars behind five consecutive service points from Megan Stanley.
In the second game, Surry jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the serving of Alyssa Parker and never trailed taking the match, 25-6. The Knights captured the final game, 25-11, to close out the match.
“We were able to get everyone some much needed playing time tonight,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “One of the strengths of our team is our depth, and it’s important to keep everyone sharp.”
The Knights were led offensively by Megan Stanley with twelve kills to go along with three service aces. Mallorie Vogler added ten kills while Patty Murphy had six kills. Surry also had front row contributions from Cassie Durham with five kills, Amber Owens with four kills, and Hannah Fulk with three kills.
Alysssa Parker and Caitlin Voigt combined for thirty four assists on the evening with Parker contributing five services aces and Voigt adding three service aces.
Defensively for Surry, Brittany Draughn notched twelve digs while Taylor Moxley added four digs. Tori Nelson also contributed two digs and added two service aces. Durham led the Knights with four blocks while Fulk and Murphy added three each.
“Hopefully, we can continue to play together as a team,” added Marion-Kiser. “We certainly need to keep improving as the season continues.”
Surry (7-0) travels to Louisburg on Friday for a 6 pm game. On Saturday, September 26, the Knights travel to Vance-Granville for a 1 pm game. Surry returns home on Tuesday against Catawba Valley. Game time is set for 6 pm in the Dobson campus gym and admission is free. |
