Surry rebounded from an opening set loss to defeat Davidson County Community College, 3-1, in volleyball action on Tuesday evening, September 22.
The Knights dropped the first game, 25-21 to the Storm before capturing the next three sets by scores of 27-25, 28-26, and 25-14. In the first set, Davidson County was led by Lauren Leonard and Whitney Saintsing. The Storm broke a 21-21 tie taking the first set with the final four points.
The Knights bounced back in the second set breaking a 25-25 tie behind the serving of Mallorie Vogler and Alyssa Parker along with stellar defensive play from libero Brittany Draughn (pictured). With the match all even at 1-1, Surry took a 2-1 advantage by taking game three, 28-26 behind outside hitter Megan Stanley.
Stanley finished the match with 17 kills while adding ten digs, two blocks, and two service aces. In the fourth set, the Knights raced out to 13-6 lead before closing out the match, 25-14.
“After the first match, we played well,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “The entire match was well played by both teams. Davidson County has an outstanding team, and really played hard.”
Surry received excellent defensive play from Draughn who notched twenty digs to go along with two assists. Also on the defensive end for the Knights, Patty Murphy contributed twelve blocks while Cassie Durham added ten. Hannah Fulk notched six blocks with Amber Owens recording four.
Offensively for Surry, Stanley tallied 17 kills while Vogler recorded ten kills along with two digs and a service ace. Durham added five kills while Fulk, Owens and Murphy added three kills each.
The Knights also received solid setter play from both Alyssa Parker and Caitlin Voigt. Parker notched 21 assists on the evening while Voigt added twelve.
“Our entire team made contributions,” added Marion-Kiser. “After a tough first set, we bounced back, and focused on playing together. We had a really good team effort.”
Surry (6-0) is back in action on Wednesday, September 23, hosting Central Carolina Community College in the campus gym. Game time is set for 6 pm and admission is free. |
