Colorado Springs, CO- Four student-athletes at Surry Community College were recently recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association as Academic All-Americans. Chris Calloway, Ashley Humphries, Dakota Lawson, and Dawn Sisk earned honors for overall grade point average while excelling in intercollegiate athletics.

Surry golfer Chris Calloway was honored as a Distinguished Academic All-American totaling a 3.88 overall grade point average. Calloway, a Starmount High School graduate, was also honored as the Surry Student-Athlete of the Year for the past two academic years. As the Knights top ranked golfer, Calloway led Surry to an appearance in the District Golf Tournament held in Cullman, Alabama.

Ashley Humphries, a sophomore volleyball player was honored as a Distinguished Academic All-American with a 3.80 overall grade point average. Humphries, a graduate of North Stokes High School earned an Associates Degree in Arts this past spring and will continue her education at Appalachian State University this fall. Humphries, an outside hitter, helped the Lady Knights volleyball team to 12-2 record and a runner-up finish in the regular season.

Another member of the volleyball team, Dakota Lawson was also honored as a Distinguished Academic All-American with a 3.86 overall grade point average. Lawson, a graduate of North Surry High School, is currently attending Salem College. Lawson was honored with the “Coaches Award” for volleyball at the recent Surry Athletic Banquet while having an outstanding two-year career as an outside hitter for the Lady Knights.

Dawn Sisk, a member of this year’s inaugural softball team, helped lead the Lady Knights to a 15-17 record and fourth place finish in the Region X Tournament. Sisk (left) was named as an Academic All-American with an overall 3.63 grade point average. The West Stokes High School graduate played a solid first base while also seeing action on the mound for the Lady Knights.

Of the current 32 Region X junior colleges with 2,200 student-athletes, only 17 student-athletes were honored as Academic All-Americans. Of those, seven student-athletes were selected from North Carolina Community Colleges with four being honored from Surry.

“Having four of the seven student-athletes in North Carolina Community Colleges selected as Academic All-Americans is truly amazing,” stated Surry Athletic Director Mark Tucker. “Our student-athletes continue to amaze me when compared to other community college athletic programs. I am extremely proud of all our Academic All-Americans.”

Student-Athletes with an overall grade point average above 3.80 are recognized as Distinguished Academic All-American while student-athletes posting an overall grade point average above 3.60 are honored as Academic All-Americans.
