The Surry Community College athletic teams participated in the Dobson Christmas Parade on Sunday afternoon. Each athletic team was represented by both players and coaches and helped distribute candy to those in attendance. Team members also helped to assemble the athletic parade float which included athletic banners and food drive boxes for donated items.
“We really appreciate the Surry Community College athletic teams participating in the Dobson parade,” stated parade director, Jerry Weaver. “Collecting canned goods for their food drive was a great idea, and I know the community really appreciates it.”
The parade was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but heavy rains forced it to be postponed until Sunday.
“Our student-athletes did a wonderful job of helping collect food items while participating in the parade,” stated Surry athletic director, Mark Tucker. “We had several individuals help us with organizing and coordinating this event especially Tom and Susan Pendergraft. Their tremendous support and assistance made this a special day for all our student-athletes and coaches.”
Tucker added, “Everyone had a great time, and we appreciate all the contributions of canned food items from the community.”
The athletic teams will again assist the Surry County Sheriff’s Department with their annual Food Drive on Saturday, December 12. After helping the Sheriff’s Department organize and box all donated food items, the athletic teams will help to distribute food to needy families in the community.
“This is an outstanding service projectfor all our athletic teams,” stated Tucker. “Our student-athletes realize the importance of helping needy families in our community.”
This Holiday season the Surry athletic teams have also participated in the “Give a Kid a Coat” campaign and donated “Angel Tree” gifts to needy area children.
