Surry Falls in Championship

Surry fell to Catawba Valley Community College in the Region X Volleyball Tournament Championship held at Lenoir Community College on Saturday.

The Knights advanced to the championship by defeating Brunswick Community College prior to facing the Buccaneers. Surry jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the first set, but watched as Catawba Valley rallied to take the set, 25-21.

The Knights trailed 2-0 after the Buccaneers captured the second set, 25-22. Catawba Valley wrapped up the match and a berth in the National Junior College Volleyball Tournament in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin by taking the third set, 25-13.

“We didn’t play very well,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “But make no excuses, Catawba Valley played an excellent game, and we had no answer for them.”

The Knights were led by Megan Stanley (right) with sixteen kills to go along with fourteen digs, and one service ace. Libero Brittany Draughn racked up twenty six digs while Patty Murphy added ten kills.

“Although we came up a little short on our goal of a Region X championship, we had a great season,” added Marion-Kiser. “These girls represented our school in great fashion, and should be proud of all their accomplishments. They gave a tremendous effort, and just came up a little short.”

The Knights had three players selected to the All-Region volleyball team in Megan Stanley, Cassie Durham, and Mallorie Vogler. Stanley also finished as the runner-up in the Region X Player of the Year voting while Surry coach, Jan Marion-Kiser was selected as Region X Coach of the Year.

Surry finished the year with a final record of 20-6.
