Surry captured its first ever “Dig Pink” game defeating Piedmont College, 3-1, on Thursday, October 8. The event was held in honor of breast cancer awareness and raised over $1,000 for breast cancer research for the Side Out Foundation.
The event started by honoring Francine Marion, mother of Surry volleyball coach, Jan Marion-Kiser. Mrs. Marion, a breast cancer survivor participated in the ceremonial opening toss to begin the event. Following a rousing rendition of the National Anthem performed by Connie Smith, the Lady Knights opened the first set with a flourish.
Surry jumped out to an 11-5 lead before taking the set, 25-11. Piedmont rebounded in the second set to tie the match at 1-1 led by outside hitters Erica Buffaloe and Emily Buffaloe. After building a 5-0 lead over the Knights, Piedmont held on to take the set, 25-22. Surry responded by taking the third set, 25-19 for a 2-1 lead in the match. Cassie Durham keyed a five point rally with two service aces to break a 15-15 tie. In the fourth set, Surry put the match away early with a 13-3 lead before finishing off the Conquers, 25-8.
“This was an incredible event, and a lot of fun,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “These girls worked to raise over $1,000 for breast cancer research and awareness. We had a great crowd, gave away some wonderful door prizes, and had a lot of pink in our gym. We certainly want to thank all of our “Dig Pink” sponsors from those that contributed $1 to those that donated $100, this event could not have been a success without everyone."
Surry moves to 12-2 on the season while Piedmont College falls to 7-9.
“This event was not about winning or losing, stats or individual performances,” added Marion-Kiser. “It was about our entire team honoring cancer survivors in our community and helping to raise cancer awareness and funding. It was a remarkable evening and I could not be more proud of these girls. What they did this evening along with all the volunteers was amazing. I also want to commend Piedmont College and Coach (Phil) Franklin. Their support of this event was truly appreciated by our players and fans. They have as much class as any team we have played this year, and battled us the entire match."
Surry (12-2) returns to action at home on Friday, October 9 against Johnston Community College in a Region X match-up. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in the college gym located on the Dobson campus and admission is free.
