Brunswick Community College defeated Surry in four sets on Friday, October 2 in Region X volleyball action. The Dolphins captured the match, 3-1.
In game one, Brunswick broke a 23-23 tie and finished off the set, 25-23. The Knights came back to take game two, 25-22 to tie the match at 1-1. The Dolphins then grabbed a 2-1 lead, 25-15, in the third set behind outside hitters Jordan Clear and Hannah Ennis. Brunswick completed the match with a final set score of 25-21.
“Brunswick is an outstanding team,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “They are the defending Region X champions and everyone is trying to knock them off. They certainly have all the pressure on them to defend their title.”
Surry was led offensively by Megan Stanley with 18 kills while Cassie Durham added ten kills. Patty Murphy and Mallorie Vogler each finished with five kills each. Caitlin Voigt and Alyssa Parker each contributed 15 assists for the Knights. Brittany Draughn, Parker, and Vogler each added a pair of service aces for Surry. Defensively, Draughn collected 19 digs from her libero position while Durham notched eight blocks.
“We played well at times, but gave away too many points,” added Marion-Kiser. “I know that we can play more consistent and better volleyball.”
The Knights travel to Lenoir Community College on Saturday, October for another Region X match-up with the Lancers. Surry returns home on Tuesday, October 6 against Vance-Granville in a Region X game starting at 6:00 pm. The Knights will then host a “Dig Pink” event on Thursday, October 8 against Piedmont Baptist College at 6:00 pm. The event will help raise awareness for breast cancer.
“We certainly want the gym packed for all our home games, but especially our “Dig Pink” game against Piedmont,” added Marion-Kiser. “Hopefully, everyone will come out, wear pink, and cheer on the Lady Knights.”
Surry (10-2) will close out the three game home stand against Johnston Community College on Friday, October 9 with another Region X game starting at 4:00 pm. |
