Knights Fall to Catawba Valley  

 

The Catawba Valley Buccaneers swept Surry, 3-0, in volleyball action on Tuesday, September 29 in Region X play. With the first set knotted at 23-23, the Buccaneers scored the final two points to capture the set, 25-23. Catawba Valley took the second set, 25-21 behind outside hitter Megan Smith for a 2-0 lead. The Buccaneers closed out the match by once again breaking a 23-23 tie with the final two points of the third set, 25-23.

“We didn’t play very well,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. “You have to give Catawba Valley credit, but we’re very disappointed in our execution. We won’t make excuses, just keeping working to get better.”

Offensively, Surry was led by Megan Stanley with ten kills while Mallorie Vogler added five. Alyssa Parker contributed 14 assists while Catilin Voigt added eleven.

Defensively, Cassie Durham had eleven blocks while Patty Muphy recorded five blocks. Hannah Fulk and Amber Owens each contributed three blocks. Brittany Draughn notched eight digs from her libero position while Stanley added three digs. The Knights also received four services aces with Durham recording two aces while Parker and Voigt each had one.

“Hopefully, we can get back to playing good volleyball,” added Marion-Kiser.

Surry (9-1) will travel to Brunswick Community College for a 6:00 pm game on Friday, October 2 against the Dolphins. The Knights will then take on Lenoir Community College on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 pm.

Surry returns home with three home matches next week. On Tuesday, October 6 Surry will host Vance-Granville at 7:00 pm in a Region X conference game. The Knights will then host Piedmont College on Thursday, October 8 at 6:00 pm in the “Dig Pink” event to raise awareness for breast cancer. Surry will wrap up the week on Friday, October 9 by hosting Johnston Community College in a Region X game starting at 4:00 pm.
