Chatham Scholar Athletes Announced

Christopher Scott Calloway and Tyler Grant Jester, both graduates of Starmount High School, are the first scholarship recipients of the Alex Chatham Scholar Athlete Award. The award was established to honor Alex Chatham by providing annual funding for academic scholarships for a minimum of two golf team members. Scholarship recipients must have a 3.0 GPA and exhibit athletic excellence and character befitting a collegiate student athlete representing Surry Community College.

Christopher Calloway credits his grandfather, Archie Tucker, with teaching him to play golf. Christopher Scott Calloway and Tyler Grant JesterChris began playing at age five and through the years played with his grandfather at High Meadows and Cedarbrook. He benefited from coaches Steve Brown, Kent Phillips and Jonathan Symons and competed as a team member in the 1A state championship his freshman and sophomore years and as an individual his junior year. As a senior, he was chosen MVP for the golf team while continuing to excel academically as an A Honor Roll student and member of the National Honor Society. Chris is interested in the Industrial Systems Technology program at Surry Community College and looks forward to the opportunity to play collegiate golf as a part of the new SCC Golf Team. His father Scotty Calloway is a fire science instructor through the Corporate and Continuing Education Division.

Tyler Jester began playing golf with his father Ronald Jester at age five but says he got serious about the sport at age ten. He too competed as a team member in the 1A championship his freshman year and as an individual his junior year. He credits his father with teaching him golf basics and personal coaches, Jonathan Kiger and Zim Zimmerman for developing his game. He was a member of the Starmount Academic Club. Tyler plans to major in business transferring to either UNCW or ASU after completing his two-year degree.

During a recent interview, these young men outlined the qualities they believe participation in the game of golf can produce: confidence, punctuality, honesty, determination and integrity. Each is excited about the college experience and looks forward to meeting new people and doing his best academically and on the golf course to represent Surry Community College.
