Surry basketball began in 1968 with its first team being coached by Carlyle Shepherd. That first team produced Jerry Hemmings who was recently inducted into Surry County's Athletic Hall of Fame. Jerry is the winningest college coach in Canadian history. Surry continued to prosper under Wayne Motsinger who won 10 Conference championships with three regional runner-ups. He also coached two junior college All-Americans in Tony Searcy and Dock McNair. Motsinger coached numerous All-Conference and All-Region players. The basketball program dropped from Div.I to Div.III in the ninety's coached by Tony Searcy. Tony George coached the 1998-99 Team to a conference title. Surry won 6 Tarheel Conference Championships from 1996 to 2004 with three regional runner-ups. Surry produced two junior college All-Americans (Mike Noel, 2000; Antonio Byrd, 2004) and one Academic All- American (Rickmon Logan, 2003). Several formal players have transferred to four year colleges with the most recent being Walt Baxley who just finished at Mars Hill in 2006 as the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year while also being named to the NCAA Div. II All Star Team.
Surry competed in Region 10 in the Carolinas Junior College Conference, finishing 7th in the South Division. We lost to Louisburg in the first round of the Conference Tournament. Jeremy Helms was voted as Surry's Best Defence Player, Qasim Frederick was voted as Surry's Best Offensive Player. Our Most Valuable Player was Marcus Brown. The Coaches Awards went to Marcus Wilmoth and Jamel Hicks. The season's most Outstanding Player Award went to Ferdinand Morales. Our Marcus Wilmoth was also named to the Surry Dean's List for academic achievement. We are very proud of all of our Surry Knight Basketball Players.
