Colorado Springs, CO - Surry's Johnny Spake has been named to the 2007 Eastern District baseball team by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The team is comprised of the top baseball players from Region X (North and South Carolina), Region XV (New York), and Region XX (Maryland and West Virginia).
"Johnny had an outstanding season this year, and we are proud of his selection to the Eastern District team," stated Surry coach Mark Tucker. "Johnny is not only an outstanding baseball player, but also an outstanding individual."
Spake earned first team All-Region X honors with a .397 average including 13 home runs and 60 RBI's. The Surry first baseman also scored 46 runs while collecting 17 doubles and posting a slugging percentage of .718.
Spake, a sophomore from Catawba, NC, recorded an on-base percentage of .520 while totaling 125 total bases for the season. In addition, Spake earned the inaugural Rawlings Region X Defensive Player of the Year award and was voted as Region X Runner-up Player of the Year. Spake led Surry to an overall record of 80-38 in two seasons.
Surry finished the 2007 season with a 39-20 record while completing the 2006 campaign with an overall record of 41-18.
Spake becomes the second consecutive Surry player to earn Eastern District honors following outfielder Ryan Petty's selection in 2006.
