McCurry Drafted by Baltimore Orioles

Orlando, Florida - Former Surry standout Cole McCurry was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. McCurry finished the 2007 season at Tennessee Wesleyan College with a record of 13-0.

The left-hander from Asheville, North Carolina led the Bulldogs to a final NAIA Cole McCurrynational ranking of 7th. The draft selection was the second for McCurry in his college career. McCurry was selected in the 31st round by the Atlanta Braves following his freshman season at Surry. McCurry returned to Surry for the 2006 season, and elected to attend Tennessee Wesleyan this past season when the Orioles selected him in the 43rd round.

McCurry along with former Surry Knight, Jared Stanley, led Tennessee Wesleyan to an overall record of 46-14 and a perfect 18-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference mark in 2007. McCurry finished the season with the third most wins (13) in NAIA and was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as well as Appalachian Athletic All-Conference selection.

"We are extremely proud of Cole and wish him all the best during his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles," stated Surry coach Mark Tucker. "Cole came into our program as a skinny kid throwing 81-82 mph and through hard work and instruction developed into a professional pitcher throwing 91-92 mph. The Orioles got a talented pitcher and outstanding young man," added Tucker.

During his two seasons at Surry, McCurry helped lead the Knights to a 47-14 record in 2005 and 41-18 mark in 2006.
