Luck Drafted by Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Orlando, Florida - Surry signee Chris Luck was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 20th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. Luck, a right-handed pitcher from South Granville High School in Creedmoor, North Carolina, committed to the Knights in February.

The senior posted impressive numbers this past season including a record of 7-2 with two saves in 55 innings of action. Luck also posted an earned run average of Chris Luck1.40 allowing only 33 hits while striking out 100 batters and only walking 18.

Luck was ranked by Impact Baseball at the 7th best senior in the state of North Carolina. Luck led South Granville to a share of the Mid-State regular seasonChris Luck conference title, along with the Mid-State tournament championship. Luck also led the Vikings to the third round of the North Carolina 3A state baseball playoffs. South Granville finished the season with a record of 24-5, and final 3A state ranking of 9th.

"We are very happy for Chris and we feel he has an extremely bright future in baseball," stated Surry coach Mark Tucker. Luck, who sports a fastball that was clocked at 94 mph earlier this spring, now must make a decision between signing a professional contract or playing a year at Surry before reentering the draft.

"We have told Chris all along that we support whatever decision he makes in regard to his future. It is everyone’s dream as a kid to play professional baseball, and we certainly wish him the best if he makes that choice," Tucker said.

Surry has a strong record of not only having players drafted while playing for the Knights, but also signing players that have been drafted to play out of high school.

"We try to recruit the top players, and sometimes they have an opportunity to play professional baseball, but we certainly support them if they chose to sign a professional contract," said Tucker.
